NQ and ES futures trading hours
Read NQ and ES trading hours in Eastern and Central Time, separate the cash session from Globex, and check chart settings and account deadlines.
The normal NQ and ES schedule
NQ and ES futures trade on CME Globex from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon, with a daily maintenance break. This page covers their standard electronic session. For the contract basics and a beginner learning sequence, start with day trading futures.
| Session boundary | Eastern Time, New York | Central Time, Chicago |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly opening | Sunday, 6:00 p.m. | Sunday, 5:00 p.m. |
| Daily maintenance, Monday–Thursday | 5:00–6:00 p.m. | 4:00–5:00 p.m. |
| Weekly closing | Friday, 5:00 p.m. | Friday, 4:00 p.m. |
| Normal U.S. stock-market core session | Monday–Friday, 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. |
The last row describes the cash stock market, which is a useful reference when following NQ and ES. Futures are already trading before that opening bell. Sources: CME equity-index hours and NYSE core-session hours.
Holidays, exceptional halts and an expiring contract’s final trading time can override the standard week. Check the exact date and product on CME’s trading-hours calendar.
Use the current break schedule
Older schedules may show a separate 4:15–4:30 p.m. Eastern halt. CME eliminated that 15-minute equity-futures halt for the June 28, 2021 trade date. The normal maintenance break in the table is 5:00–6:00 p.m. Eastern. CME’s filing with the CFTC.
“Open” also has a specific meaning on an exchange calendar. A pre-open phase may accept order entry while matching remains closed. CME lists these phases separately. Confirm the continuous-trading start rather than treating the first displayed time as permission to expect a fill.
Keep the chart’s session definition with your levels
A full futures-session high can differ from a cash-session high. A chart that includes overnight trading contains price movement that a daytime-only chart leaves out.
For a hypothetical example, suppose NQ reaches 21,120 overnight and its daytime high is 21,080. A level marked “previous high” could refer to either price. Record the actual interval used: full Globex session, cash session or another defined window.
Trading platforms can apply session templates that filter which bars appear. NinjaTrader’s documentation explains that data outside a template’s sessions is ignored. Inspect the template’s hours and time zone; the label “RTH” alone does not establish that it matches the cash-market row above. NinjaTrader session-template documentation.
When comparing Moh’s daily bias and liquidity examples, match the chart interval before comparing a prior high or low. Save the session template with your screenshots and backtests so that changing a chart setting does not silently change the level you are studying.
Convert the date as well as the time
Eastern and Central Time follow U.S. daylight-saving changes. Their UTC offsets change during the year. Use a named location such as New York or Chicago in your calendar, then convert the specific trading date into your local time zone.
This matters especially when your country changes clocks on different dates or does not change them at all. A recurring reminder set to a fixed UTC hour can move relative to the U.S. market open.
The evening opening also belongs to a session that runs into the following day. Avoid grouping a trade log solely by local midnight when you are checking a provider’s daily limits. Use the provider’s defined trading day and time zone.
Check your account’s deadline separately
An open exchange does not mean your account permits the same position throughout the session. A broker can stop offering intraday margin before the exchange closes. An evaluation provider can impose an earlier flattening deadline or additional restrictions.
For example, NinjaTrader currently lists initial margin becoming necessary 15 minutes before the session close. It also describes changes around early closes and economic announcements. That is a broker policy, not a universal NQ or ES deadline. NinjaTrader position-management policy.
Before the session, confirm the day’s exchange schedule, the account’s margin or flattening deadline, and the chart time zone. After closing a position, check the remaining working orders too. The order-type guide walks through that practice routine; margin versus risk explains why a later deadline can require substantially more equity.
